What you’ll revise

Class 7 English: Vocabulary: synonyms, antonyms and words in context

  1. Battle 1 · Synonyms

    • A synonym means the same, or nearly the same, as another word: big and large, brave and courageous.
    • Choose the synonym that fits the sentence, not just the one in the dictionary.
    • Glad, cheerful and joyful are all synonyms of happy.
  2. Battle 2 · Antonyms

    • An antonym means the opposite: hot and cold, ancient and modern.
    • Prefixes often make antonyms: un- (unhappy), dis- (dislike), im- (impossible).
    • Match the kind of word: the opposite of “brave” is “cowardly”, not “coward”.
  3. Battle 3 · Words in context

    • Use the words around a new word to work out what it means.
    • Idioms don’t mean what they say: “a piece of cake” means something very easy.
    • Homophones sound alike but mean different things: their and there, hear and here.

Students build games like this. In the Beginner cohort, each student turns a chapter of their own syllabus into a game, then revises with it for 10 minutes a day.
