What you’ll revise

Class 6 Geography: Latitudes and longitudes, Oceans and continents, Landforms

  1. Flight 1 · Lines on the globe

    • The Equator, at 0°, divides the Earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
    • The Tropic of Cancer (23½°N) passes through the middle of India. The Tropic of Capricorn is at 23½°S.
    • The Prime Meridian (0°) passes through Greenwich. Indian Standard Time is set by the 82½°E meridian.
  2. Flight 2 · Oceans and continents

    • There are seven continents. Asia is the largest and Australia the smallest.
    • The Pacific is the largest and deepest ocean. The Indian Ocean is the only ocean named after a country.
    • India has the Arabian Sea to its west, the Bay of Bengal to its east and the Indian Ocean to its south.
  3. Flight 3 · Landforms

    • Mountains rise far above the land around them. The Himalayas are young fold mountains; the Aravalli are among the oldest.
    • A plateau is raised land with a flat top. The Deccan Plateau is one of the oldest plateaus.
    • Plains are low, flat land, usually made by rivers. The fertile Ganga plains are home to millions of people.
