Class 9 History: The French Revolution
Era 1 · France before 1789
- Society was split into three estates: the clergy, the nobility and the third estate, who paid the taxes.
- Peasants paid the taille, a tax to the state, and tithes to the Church.
- Louis XVI became king in 1774 and found the treasury empty. Rising bread prices led to a subsistence crisis.
Era 2 · 1789, the revolution begins
- On 5 May 1789, Louis XVI called the Estates General. The third estate broke away and swore the Tennis Court Oath.
- On 14 July 1789, crowds stormed the Bastille, a hated fortress-prison.
- The Constitution of 1791 made France a constitutional monarchy. It began with the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen.
Era 3 · Republic, Terror and Napoleon
- In 1792 the monarchy was abolished and France became a republic. Louis XVI was executed in January 1793.
- Robespierre’s Reign of Terror, from 1793 to 1794, ended with his own execution in July 1794.
- A five-member Directory followed, and in 1804 Napoleon Bonaparte crowned himself Emperor of France.
