What you’ll revise

Class 8 Science: Cell: structure and functions

  1. Run 1 · Discovering the cell

    • Robert Hooke first saw cells, in a thin slice of cork, in 1665.
    • The cell is the basic unit of life. An amoeba is a single cell; our bodies are made of many cells.
    • Cells come in many shapes and sizes: nerve cells are long, and an ostrich egg is the largest single cell.
  2. Run 2 · Parts of a cell

    • The cell membrane covers the cell and controls what goes in and out.
    • Cytoplasm is the jelly-like substance between the cell membrane and the nucleus.
    • The nucleus controls the cell. Its chromosomes carry genes, which pass features from parents to their young.
  3. Run 3 · Plant and animal cells

    • Plant cells have a cell wall outside the cell membrane. Animal cells don’t.
    • Plant cells have plastids. The green ones, chloroplasts, contain chlorophyll for photosynthesis.
    • Plant cells usually have one large vacuole; animal cells have small ones.

Students build games like this. In the Beginner cohort, each student turns a chapter of their own syllabus into a game, then revises with it for 10 minutes a day.
