Before 1789: three estates
French society was divided into three groups, and only one of them paid the taxes.
FIRST ESTATE
The clergy
Privileged by birth, and free from paying taxes to the state.
SECOND ESTATE
The nobility
Also privileged by birth, and also free from taxes to the state.
THIRD ESTATE
Everyone else
Peasants, workers and the middle class. Only they paid taxes to the state, such as the taille; peasants also paid tithes to the Church.
